Moving to Shanghai, China gave me my first introduction to photography. In preperation for this big step in my life I got a camera, it was a point-and-shoot. A big screen and big zoom range, that was all I needed to conquer the city of (then) 19 milion inhabitants.

 

It had to have all the possibilties of a manual 'professional' camera because I would want to learn and grow if I decided I liked it.

 

It turned out I did in fact like it. Shutterspeed, f-numbers and use of flash, all that was possible with that small camera was done. If it wasn't possible, I'd make it possible one way or another.

 

It kickstarted a hobby, but like with all people that start a hobby, you grow and develop. I needed better equipment, because the equipment couldn't bring me what I needed.

 

I exchanged this tiny Canon point-and-shoot for my first DSLR. What a difference, what a new world. The possibilities where endless. In hindsight, it might have helped that I moved to Iceland. Either way, the passion grew. But so did the gear collecting.

 

More lenses, better bags, tripods, you name it, I acquired it. Time passed, all the gear endured it's use and I moved to Florida.

 

A different climate, a humid climate. It was what I needed to realise that I had too much gear and it did not bring me more joy in photography.

 

This realisation made me get rid of it all. and I made a promise to myself to take a more minimalistic approach, as that was what made me the most creative in photography.

 

I got into the Fujifilm X system and only slightly broke the promise I made myself, but I regained the joy I once had and that's what was most important to me.
